Donya

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Donya, a beautiful and resilient Off-the-Track Thoroughbred who touched the lives of all who knew her. Born in 1998, Donya’s journey was one of both hardship and triumph. In partnership with two other horse rescue organizations, we helped save Donya and two of her pasture mates from neglect and starvation. When we found them, they were eating rotten vegetables—some toxic for horses—with limited access to water and their bodies covered in ticks. Despite months of tireless efforts from veterinarians and volunteers, two of the horses were unable to recover from the cruel conditions they endured. But Donya, with her incredible spirit, fought through.

Donya made a full recovery thanks to the care of the Sonoma Equine Rescue, Rehab and Adoption (SERRA) organization before coming to us at Sunrise in August 2016. Her strength and gentle nature were an inspiration to all, and she thrived in her new life, surrounded by love, good health, and the companionship of our herd.

Her story is a testament to the resilience of horses and the importance of rescue work. Though we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her life—a life that, despite its challenges, was marked by recovery, joy, and the deep connection she shared with those who cared for her.

Rest in peace, sweet Donya. You will be dearly missed.
