Reggie
This is Reggie. He is fostered over in Santa Rosa.
Reggie is a thoroughbred: he was born in 2003 and raced on the track. He then went on to have a private owner and to be ridden as a 3 day event horse. When his owner could not ride anymore due to time and financial constraints, Reggie was kept in a pasture, alone.
Although he is a big thoroughbred, over 1,000 pounds, who faced many challenges as a race horse, living alone was stressful for Reggie. Deprived of another horse to keep watch, he lost sleep and experienced loneliness. Horses are hard-wired to live in a herd. His personality changed. His owner noticed but was unable to give him the attention or companions that he needed. She could see that he was not happy, and reached out to Sunrise to help find him a home.
Reggie is lucky; we were able to find a foster home for him. His joy at being with the other horse was wonderful to see. He has gained weight and muscle tone. Both horses are happier, and have the companionship and care they need.
