Adonis & Mirage
Mirage is an arabian quarter horse cross with an unusual coat - she has paint markings on her skin but her coat is all white. Mirage spent most of her life with one owner, exploring the trails of northern California. When that owner no longer could care for her and her buddy Adonis, she gave her to a home that she trusted. Unfortunately, changing circumstances meant the new owners were no longer able to afford board. When we learned of Mirage and Adonis, they were underweight and had been at the stables for several months. Despite receiving large portions of hay, Mirage and Adonis were not gaining weight. At that point, we began paying their board, provided vet and farrier visits, and ordered the sacks of grain that were recommended by the veterinarian to supplement their hay.
When a foster home and a sponsor became available in Napa, Mirage and Adonis were welcomed into the Sunrise family and transferred there. During their time in foster care, Mirage's health issues became more evident, including episodes of colic caused by sand accumulation in her large intestine from consuming dirt in search of food. After intensive treatment, the sand accumulation appears to have resolved. The pink skin under her lovely coat makes her susceptible to sunburn, and Mirage has sun protectant fly sheets and a fly mask.
Mirage has arthritis in her left front pastern joint, for which she is receiving special shoeing and daily anti-inflammatory medications. We continue to watch her comfort carefully as her rehabilitation continues. It’s important to us that she be able to move and function as a normal horse without pain.
Mirage and Adonis moved to Tubbs Lane to live with the rest of our herd. Mirage’s calm and friendly demeanor has made her a favorite. We hope that Mirage will be able to participate in some of our programs for all ages, and enjoy the extra grooming and attention that comes with the job.
Adonis has lived with Mirage since 2012. He is an Arabian gelding with all the spirit that implies. Adonis is a friendly horse, and like his bonded buddy, Mirage, he was used for trail riding. His story parallels hers as they were found undernourished at a boarding facility, with their owners unable to care for them. During his time at a foster home, Adonis underwent testing for some urinary issues that now have seemed to be resolved. He has benefited greatly from the focused attention and nutrition at that home. Adonis has a dental condition, EOTRH, which makes it difficult to chew. He has had trouble gaining weight with his slow eating, which necessitates being separated from Mirage a couple of times a day. However, they are fine with this as long as they remain within sight of each other.
